Choosing a Pearl Type

Buying a pearl is not as simple as it sounds. Often we mistake buying or choosing a pearl for selecting the prettiest pearl among the bunch. But, if you want a pearl with reliability, you have to look out for characters like quality, durability and workability. There is a set of things that you need to consider while buying like the appearance, size, location of growth and the way it is grown. Therefore, this is a five step method that will describe you the procedure of how to choose pearls.

1.      Select a type: The first step to be done is choosing the type of the pearl. To do this, you should start off with choosing the style of growth. When a grain of sand is deposited in an oyster it gets coated with nacre to give the pearl over the time. Therefore, the pearls can either be natural or cultured. Majority of them are cultured and therefore choose wisely without being deceived. Second, compare the saltwater pearls with freshwater pearls. The later ones are round and expensive. Third, categorize the pearl whether it belongs to Akoya pearl group, South Sea black pearl group, South Sea white pearl group, South Sea gold pearl group, Cortez pearl group, Conch pearl group. Know what you want to buy in prior and decide the group accordingly. 

2.      Determine the size: If you know the purpose of using the pearl, you’re going to buy and are well aware of its optimized usage, decide the size before proceeding to further step. Different pearl groups belong to different sizes and size wills cutoff you the options to choose from by leading you to the precised selection. Larger pearls are usually expensive when compared. The average size of the pearl is around 10mm-12mm. 

3.      Observe the shape: Pearls are available in different shapes from being typically round to non conventional form. The shape of the pearl is a personal preference. Choose whether you want you’re pearl to be round, oval, off-round, button, drop, maybe or baroque. After choosing the shape, look after the pearl and make sure that they represent what you’re looking for. 

4.      Consider the qualities: Apart from the size and shape, there are furthermore qualities that you need to look at like Color, luster, surface perfection and nacre. Two type of colors that are abundantly available are body color and the overtone color. Decide what you want your strand to be. Neglect the minor imperfections, but make sure that the shape is clear-cut among all the pearls of the stand and observe if the luster is adequate and uniform. Sometimes, pearls that are grown in calms and cronches are mixed with that of natural pearls. Compare the similarities between pearls of the strand.

5.      Choose a strand: Prefer buying loose strands instead of those that are tied. Because, these are usually drilled to form specific beads. You can undrill them and use the way you want. Get a choker instead of a long chain. It would suit anyone the best. Other than these two, you can go for a princess strand, opera necklace, rope strand, bib necklace or matinee necklace depending on the desired length and size of the pearl.After making sure that you are done with these five steps, you will be left with few options among the display.
