A succinct overview to apply for the candidature in UK Election

If you are looking forward to standing as a candidate in the elections of UK, then this is the article that will give you a brief overview of it. First of all, you need to be aware that this is a job that comes with a huge responsibility and hefty schedule. One should apply only if he/she can take apt and unbiased decisions and put the country above all.

Eligibility for the candidature- In order to stand in the UK Parliament elections, you must be 18 or above years old. Other than being 18 years you should either be a British citizen, a citizen of such a commonwealth country that you either have enough leave or you doesn’t require a leave to remain in the UK for an infinite period of time or citizen of the republic of the Ireland.


Sorry, you can’t apply- Some personnel’s are barred from standing as a candidate in UK elections. The list of them is as following:

•    Police and armed force members
•    Civil servants
•    Judges and peers who have the liberty to vote in the House of Lords
•    Those who have been declared as bankrupt in Northern Ireland
•    Those who have or ever had estate confiscated in the Scotland
•    Those who ever have had a bankruptcy or debt relief restriction order in England, Northern Ireland or Wales?
•    Those who have ever being sentenced to the imprisonment of 3 months or more.

Moreover, you can’t stand from more than one ward of the same locality. Even if the Returning Officer accepts your nomination, if you don’t withdraw your name from all the wards except one before the polling, you will be deemed to withdraw your candidature from all the wards.
Campaigning for the elections- On the day of dissolution of the Parliament, you will become an official candidate in the UK Elections.  Thereafter, you can organize a campaign to convince people to vote for you. During the campaign, you must ensure that you and your agents follow the ‘code of conduct on handling applications’ to avoid any situation where you can be questioned for your honesty.

You or your members must be generous while talking to the people and do not force or threaten them to vote for you by any means.
